Stress & Adrenal Function

Hormones produced in the adrenal glands include cortisol, adrenaline and aldosterone. Production that is too much or too little can result in adrenal disorders that affect the way your body functions. Stress affects all systems of the body including the musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous, and reproductive systems. Our bodies are well equipped to handle stress in small doses, but when that stress becomes long-term or chronic, it can have serious effects on your body.

Finding Problems With Stress And The Adrenal Glands

Laboratory Tests
History
Rebound Pupil
Tenderness in the pes anserinus at the medial aspect of the knee
Ragland Test
Chapman Reflex

Laboratory Tests

You can test cortisol/dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) ratios and get a very accurate representation of how much adrenal hormone is being produced and how much stress is affecting the body.

History

Your practitioner will discuss water quality and quantity with you.

Rebound Pupil

Shine a light in the client’s eye. The pupil should constrict and stay constricted. Mineral corticoid production upsets potassium/sodium balance and interferes with the muscle constricting the pupil. This is called a “rebound pupil,” a pupil that constricts initially but then opens or oscillates under the light.

Tenderness in the pes anserinus at the medial aspect of the knee

This is the insertion of the sartorius. Tenderness at the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), which is the origin of the sartorius, is also an indicator of adrenal involvement.

Ragland Test

If you measure the client’s blood pressure when he or she is supine and then immediately when he or she stands up, the systolic value should be 10 points higher when standing. If the blood pressure stays the same or drops, it is an indication of hypoadrenia.

Chapman Reflex

The Chapman Reflexes for the adrenal glands are 1 inch superior and lateral to the umbilicus. Tenderness of the reflexes may indicate a need to support the adrenal glands.

Tips For Improving Stress And Adrenal Function

Exercise

Moderate aerobic exercise is good. This is an exercise that uses large muscles repetitively and is mild enough that you can carry on a normal conversation during the activity. Anaerobic exercise (exercising so hard that you can’t carry on a normal conversation) can be stressful and should be limited while the adrenal glands are recovering.

Sports & Hobbies

Meditation and Yoga maybe a little ʺNew Ageʺ for some people. Hobbies are a good solution for these people. Most hobbies are relaxing; your mind has to focus on a simple task rather than on sources of stress.

Diet

There are many types of stress. Chemical, physical, thermal, and mental stresses can all cause harm to the body. Stress is cumulative. A stressful job situation is compounded by a poor diet. Eat small, frequent meals; avoid chemical additives and sugar, refined carbohydrates, and hydrogenated oil. Eat plenty of vegetables and make sure that you get enough protein. At mealtime relax and focus on enjoying your food; don’t eat on the run.

Meditation

Meditation, Yoga, Tai Chi or simply deep breathing exercises can help you bring stress under control. Much of the damage that stress does to your health is not due to any external factors, but rather how your mind interprets those factors. Meditation and other techniques help to reduce the harm of stress by quieting the mind.
